GRAND MAGUS
by J. Bennett
When it comes to Scandinavian Rock & Roll, the general consensus seems to be that the Hellacopters, Gluecifer and Backyard Babies comprise the Big Three. But while these fake cowboys are desperately trying to out-suck each other in an effort to become the absolute worst possible combination of Guns n’ Roses and the New York Dolls (or Kiss and the Ramones), outfits like Spiritual Beggars, Firebird and Dozer put out the records that actually sound good. And then there’s Grand Magus, the stoic high priests of thunder-blues and detuned damnation, who recently emerged, full-grown and bearded, from a blaze in the northern sky, to usurp the throne and banish the pretenders to Rock & Roll Purgatory, where they can languish for perpetuity (with Don Henley) in the dim glow of their own mediocrity. After all, with Magus singer/guitarist JB now installed as the new Spiritual Beggars vocalist as well, it’s only a matter of time before this trio of Viking warriors overthrows the current Scandinavian regime. Indeed, they have little concern for looking pretty and even less for sounding like they’re from Hollywood—they got the drummer from Dismember to produce their album, for chrissake. They’ve just survived a six-week European hell-ride with Roadsaw and Orange Goblin, in which they were undoubtedly left with the short count on the booze and sloppy thirds on the groupies, but with this, their debut album, their testament remains unbowed as the first thunderbolts of mutiny crash down on the heads of the unworthy. All hail the new kings.
