GL-Productions review

Gabriel Lilliehöök

Grand Magus (Swe) – Same (Rise Above Records) One of the best debut albums from a Swedish hardrock/heavy metal band in a long time that is how I see this awesome masterpiece that have got rave reviews all over the place and earned a number one position for the album of the month list in Germanys Metal Hammer December issue Grand Magus deserves all the roses, I wonder what the next album will be like according to the band it will be a progression and it will also be even more heavier than this one how that is possible but Grand Magus have the talent to do so cause the major strength that this unit have is the songs, the tracklist here becomes instant classics it feels like Grand Magus have been around for years but they havent been around for that long another strength is the powerhouse vocals by Janne Christofferson definitely one of the greatest singers that Sweden have produced in recent years, his voice has got him a place in Spiritual Beggars as replacement for Spice but Janne is fully concentrated on Grand Magus that is the main priority one other strength that I feel that this band have is a solid package it is very tight very dynamic and fantastic playing. I dont know how many times I have played this album but everytime I find new things it is certainly an album that just grows stronger and stronger and you cant stop listening to it it becomes a habit .The production by Fred Estby (Terrafirma, Roachpowder, Zebulon etc.) is perfect, he have not only made a excellent final mix he is playing mellotron on the album as well + added a extra dimension to the Grand Magus sound ,the sound that this band have is classic vintage 70s bluesbased hard mean and charming heavyrock. Listening to the disc it is very hard to pick out any specific faves Gauntlet, Never Learned, LodBrok, Mountain Of Power is just some of the magic(k) and the smoking mindtripper Generator kicks out a few cells in the head. This is an album that you cant be without,if you are serious fan of 70s hard-heavyrock you will worship Grand Magus debut disc. Definitely a milestone, check out my recent interview in case you have missed it for more info.
